Bariatric surgery is a weight loss option for patients who have been diagnosed with obesity. The surgery will make changes to your digestive system by either decreasing the size of your stomach or bypass part of your GI tract.
Bariatric surgery won’t just shrink the amount of food you can eat before you feel full, but it will actually change your hormonal response. Sleeve gastrectomy is the most common bariatric surgery procedure. In this procedure, your doctor will remove 3/4ths of your stomach, changing it from the size of a football to the size of a banana.
Gastric bypass surgery, also called Roux-en-Y, is a procedure in which your doctor will “bypass” most of your stomach and the upper portion of your small intestine. This will cause the digestion process to happen later on in your digestive tract, effectively limiting the amount of calories absorbed.
While less common, Lap-BAND, also called laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, is a procedure in which your doctor places an adjustable silicone band around the upper portion of the stomach, limiting the amount of food consumption and slowing the passage of food to the intestines.
The first part of your small intestine is called the duodenum. Duodenal switch surgery shortens the path food follows through the small intestine. This reduces the time your body has to absorb calories from the food you eat and helps you lose weight.
Oftentimes, to meet your individual needs, our surgeons will offer bariatric surgeries in combination. This allows us to combine surgical techniques to give you the best and safest results.
Our bariatric surgeons accept revisional bariatric surgery patients. If you have previously had surgery and are looking for additional support due to regained weight or surgical complications, we can help. Our surgeons will work with you to find the best solution to get you back on track and living your best life.
It’s important to note, surgery is just one step in your bariatric and weight loss journey. While it is an important step in the process, it is often accompanied by other treatments and support options such as nutrition, lifestyle changes and therapy.
